Interior Designer
Job Description
The Interior Designer is responsible for managing the design aspect of residential remodeling and new home design-build projects. This includes acting as the clients’ point of contact for all design-related aspects of the project and partnering with the Lead Carpenter throughout the construction phase. The Interior Designer may also be responsible for managing interns, design assistants or other designers assigned to their projects. This is a mid to advanced level position in the residential design industry.
Responsibilities and Duties

Lead design and estimating meetings with clients, trade partners, vendors, and production team.

Develop and manage timely and efficient project schedules with client and production.

Work with estimating and production to insure design development within budget.

Communicate promptly and clearly with client about timing and budget.

Accurately measure existing structures and provide detailed as-built floor plans for design development.

Interview clients to ensure designs are reflective of their tastes, needs, and budgets.

Develop professional and knowledgeable design concepts for clients to review based upon client interviews, idea books, and latest industry trends.

Create hand-drawn and CAD drawings as needed for clarification, specification, and detail pertaining to a larger scope of work or design (i.e. cabinet and tile layout details).

Provide knowledgeable guidance to clients regarding various products and continue to learn about new products; this may include developing and maintaining product libraries.

Identify all products needed for the construction of the project, including client education, specification sheets, and plan documentation.

Display appropriate sales skills in client meetings.

Work with production team to resolve design issues during construction.
-
Maintain detailed notes from all meetings.

Maintain current schedule, logs, and project information to cloud-based project management platform.
Qualifications
-
Professional degree in Interior Design or Architecture or equivalent industry experience
-
A minimum of 5 years of experience in residential design
-
Advanced proficiency in Chief Architect or similar CAD program
-
Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe software
-
Construction knowledge, management, or field experience desired
-
Basic knowledge of California Building Codes desired, but not required
-
Experience with client and subcontractor interface in residential construction
-
Demonstrated ability to produce documentation for built projects, organize information, and manage workflow
-
Structural and detail design experience desired
-
Ability to perform zoning and building code research
-
Ability to manage multiple projects through all phases of design
-
Strong written, verbal, and visual communication skills
-
Solid time management and organizational skills with attention to detail
-
Experience working in a collaborative environment
-
Ability to work independently and self-monitor progress in order to meet expectations

Ability to delegate tasks and manage resources assigned to projects efficiently and professionally

Design Manager
Job Description
The Design Manager is responsible for managing the staff and day-to-day operations of the design department for the company. This includes supervising, training, and coaching all designers and estimators and ensuring the team produces quality designs, accurate design-build plans & specifications, and provides clients with a high level of service while following company-approved practices and processes. The Design Manager works with the Production Manager to facilitate good communication and positive working relationships between all design, estimating, and construction staff.
Responsibilities and Duties

Implement strategic plan for the department and monitor & report on performance.

Contribute to the development of company vision and strategic planning.
-
Assist in implementing strategies and process associated with the company vision.
-
Consistently review and develop workflow process for the Design Department to optimize progress towards strategic goals.
-
Manage and supervise design team of 3-5 staff.
-
Clearly communicate processes, quality standards, and job expectations to staff.
-
Foster a productive work environment that motivates and inspires staff toward high quality work, team engagement, and personal development.
-
Monitor and interact with each employee regularly to discuss skill level, achievements, challenges, and growth potential. Provide at least one written review per year for each employee.

Assign workload and assignments to employees that match abilities and provide opportunity for growth.
-
Hold weekly team meetings to review resource allocation, encourage team collaboration on design issues, and review or update company processes.
-
Provide quality control and oversight for all design projects.
-
Conduct a detailed review of each project including plans, specifications, correspondence, schedule, and logs once per week. Provide feedback and create task lists (as needed) for designers to ensure project stays on track and follows applicable company processes.

Ensure that all designs are produced to a high quality in a timely manner and are documented using the correct processes, templates, and formatting guidelines.

Sit in on client meetings with lead designers as needed or requested.
-
Assist designers with resolving any issues or concerns from clients during the design process.
-
Assist carpenters and designers with troubleshooting issues relating to the design during construction or in relation to code compliance.
-
Ensure department knowledge and skills are current and adequate to complete complex, custom, residential design-build projects.

Ensure the team is knowledgeable about all applicable building codes and provide timely notification for all changes or new codes relevant to the department.

Conduct training seminars, schedule field trips and host vendor lunch and learn programs to keep designers at the front of trending designs and products.

Set up training plans for the department and individual employees to encourage professional skill development.
-
Work in partnership with the Production Manager to facilitate a positive working relationship and excellent communication between staff in the design and production departments.
Qualifications

Professional degree in Interior Design or Architecture or equivalent industry experience

Business or management coursework desired but not required
-
A minimum of 5 years of experience leading residential remodeling projects

A minimum of 3 years leading or managing teams of 3 or more people

Experience with residential additions or new construction

Basic knowledge of California Building Codes

Proficiency with computers, Microsoft Office Suite, and Adobe software

Demonstrated ability to produce documentation for built projects, organize information, and manage workflow
